The double-ended boat design originated in Scandinavia. It is a direct descendant of Viking vessels and the traditional wooden Norwegian færing boats. These boats featured a pointed stern and a streamlined hull shape designed to minimise water resistance.

Later known in English as the “double-ender”, this design was widely used by fishermen in fjords and along rugged coastlines, thanks to its exceptional seaworthiness and stability. Its rounded, tapered hull allowed the boat to manoeuvre easily and maintain stability, even in the challenging conditions of the North Atlantic. The pointed stern reduces turbulence, contributing to efficiency and stability, while the shallow draught also makes the boat suitable for navigating shallow waters.

The term “Viking” was not originally used to describe all Scandinavians, but rather those who embarked on seafaring expeditions, sometimes venturing as far as the Mediterranean. Some were explorers and adventurers; others were raiders, such as Erik the Red and Ragnar Lodbrok.

One such Viking was Eryk I Pomorski (“Erik van Pomerania”) who was born at the castle in Darłowo. In local and popular historical culture he is often referred to as “the last Viking of the Baltic Sea”. The fact that our boatyard is based in this very region is, of course, no coincidence.
